Sauna rituals: dosing heat the right way

How many rounds, how long, how to cool down — and why the break is the most important part.

A sauna round looks simple: go in, sweat, come out. Whether you really benefit, though, is decided in the details — duration, temperature and above all the break in between.

How long should you stay?

A classic sauna round lasts 15 to 20 minutes at temperatures between 70 and 90 °C. Newcomers start with 5 to 10 minutes at moderate heat and build up slowly. Longer isn't automatically better: most of the effect is reached after 15 to 25 minutes; after that mainly the risk of dehydration rises.

How many rounds?

Two to three rounds per visit is the common recommendation. What happens in between matters more than the count.

The break is not an add-on

Allow 5 to 10 minutes of cooling between rounds — cold shower, fresh air or a short plunge. During that time your heart rate returns towards baseline, circulation normalises, and it is the alternation of heat and cold that creates the actual training stimulus for vessels and circulation. Skipping the break costs you a large part of the effect.

What the research shows

Regular sauna bathing is associated with lower cortisol levels, better sleep quality and a lower risk of cardiovascular events. People who use the sauna 3 to 7 times a week show the most favourable values in observational studies — while one or two visits per week already make a measurable difference.

Our recommendation at Zenctuary

2–3 rounds of 12–15 minutes with a deliberate 8–10 minute break in between — ideally in our Fire & Ice zone with a cold stimulus afterwards. Drink enough water before and after.
