Not a trend without substance: photobiomodulation is well studied — here's what red light can really do.
Red and near-infrared light therapy (technically: photobiomodulation) uses specific light wavelengths to stimulate cell processes — above all in the mitochondria, the “power plants” of our cells. The principle: certain wavelengths in the red and near-infrared range are absorbed by skin cells and trigger a cascade of physiological reactions.
What the research shows
The effect is best documented for acne and certain inflammatory skin conditions. For skin rejuvenation and collagen production, studies also show positive but more variable effects — research points to faster skin barrier recovery with sufficient exposure time (over 10 minutes). Recent reviews also classify photobiomodulation for skin use as safe, including for people with an oncological history.
What else is red light discussed for?
Early research looks at pain management, metabolic health, neurological function and sleep-wake regulation — but this research is still at the beginning and standardised protocols are missing.
