Contrast therapy: why the switch is the real effect

Not heat alone, not cold alone — the switch between them is what really moves your circulation.

Fire & Ice is more than two applications in a row. The actual effect comes from the switch: heat widens the blood vessels (vasodilation), cold contracts them (vasoconstriction). This rhythmic widening and narrowing is called the “vascular pump effect” — it moves more oxygen-rich blood into the muscles and clears waste products more efficiently.

What the research shows

A review in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that contrast therapy can reduce muscle soreness in trained individuals by up to 30 %. A meta-analysis from team sports also showed that recovery time after intense load shortened to 24 to 48 hours with alternating hot and cold baths.

A simple protocol to start with

  • 10–15 minutes infrared or traditional sauna
  • 1–3 minutes ice bath or cold shower
  • Repeat for 2–3 rounds
  • Always finish with cold — that keeps the fresh, clear effect the longest

Who is it for?

For most healthy adults, contrast therapy is well tolerated. With cardiovascular conditions, high blood pressure or during pregnancy, seek medical advice first — as with any strong heat or cold stimulus.
